This film tells the same story as "Dangerous Liaisons," but was released later, overshadowed by the success of the latter. In fact, director Miloš Forman demonstrates considerable skill, and the triangle of desire between Colin Firth, Annette Bening, and Meg Tilly is well-acted. With the majestic palaces captured in real locations, this Anglo-French co-production remains highly watchable. The plot is set in the 18th-century French aristocracy, where Madame de Montuef, jealous of her lover Gercault's impending marriage to his cousin Cecile, schemes to have the notorious Valmont take Cecile's virginity. Subsequently, Valmont is killed in a duel, and Cecile confirms she is pregnant with his child.
