After the death of the old estate owner, the unfortunate mother and her four daughters are expelled from the estate by the eldest son. With the help of relatives, they settle in a small cottage. What the domineering sister-in-law did not foresee is that her brother Edward (Hugh Grant) has fallen in love with Eleanor (Emma Thompson), the eldest of the three sisters. While rational Eleanor also has affection for Edward, she struggles to control her feelings considering the disparity in their social statuses. Meanwhile, the younger sister Marianne (Kate Winslet) is in a passionate romance with the handsome officer Willoughby (Greg Wise). Emotional Marianne expresses her admiration for Willoughby openly, even disregarding the feelings of her suitor Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman). Little did she know, Willoughby is insincere and does not truly hold Marianne's affections in regard. The relationships of the two sisters both fall into crisis. Who among the two sisters, with their contrasting personalities, will find true love and fulfill their desires? How will the four mother and daughters navigate their way out of life’s difficulties?
