The barber Lu Ping (played by Chen Kun) lives an ordinary life in Shanghai with his exceptional skills. After the Japanese army occupies Shanghai, an unexpected incident forces him to flee to another place, leading to a lifetime of wandering. After escaping to an ancient town in Jiangnan, Lu Ping meets a beautiful Jiangnan woman, Song Jiayi (played by Zeng Li), and the two fall in love at first sight. Unfortunately, Song Jiayi is already engaged, and her father, Song Fengnian, wants to ensure that his daughter has support in that turbulent era, so he marries her off to Kuomintang officer Ye Jiangtian. As a married woman, Song Jiayi never stops loving Lu Ping, and throughout his tumultuous life, besides his skills, the feelings he has for her remain unyielded. A life of love and half a lifetime of hardships, this pair of lovers sings and weeps through their life and romance during chaotic times...
