Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett) are good friends who have played together since childhood. They both have a great interest in flying and learned to pilot planes together. At the beginning of World War II, they joined the United States Army Air Forces together. During training, Rafe falls in love with Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), a nurse at the military hospital. To assist European countries in resisting the invasion of Nazi Germany, the U.S. military decides to send an elite squad to the continent. Rafe volunteers to go into combat and entrusts Evelyn to Danny's care. Soon after, the tragic news arrives that Rafe's plane has been shot down by German forces in aerial combat, with almost no chance of survival. Evelyn and Danny develop feelings for each other as they encourage one another through their pain. What they do not expect is that Rafe is not dead. When the three reunite, awkwardness ensues. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor helps them out of their predicament, and Rafe and Danny decide to be comrades instead of love rivals.
