The young and beautiful ballet dancer Matilda Kshesinskaya captures the attention of Crown Prince Nicholas with her calm demeanor during a sudden incident in a performance, along with her alluring eyes and graceful dance. Also infatuated with Matilda are the royal relative Duke Andrei and the zealous radical Vorontsov, who is willing to attack the crown prince out of jealousy. Despite being engaged, Nicholas falls hopelessly in love. After the death of Tsar Alexander III, Nicholas must fulfill his engagement in order to be crowned king. Matilda is heartbroken upon hearing the news of Nicholas's engagement, wishing only to dance at the ball before the coronation, but this wish is thwarted by Chief of Security Vlasov, who aims to protect the royal family. Unwilling to accept this, Matilda ultimately takes to the stage. Her performance may not be perfect, but it solidifies Nicholas's determination to be with her. Just as Matilda eagerly awaits Nicholas's arrival, Vorontsov, who has escaped captivity, suddenly appears and abducts her, while Vlasov ruthlessly attempts to kill her. Believing his love is gone, Nicholas, despondent, decides to go through with the coronation ceremony with the daughter of the German Grand Duke, Alix. At this moment, the surviving Matilda suddenly appears, but it is too late; the lovers cannot become a couple.
