In the second half of the 16th century, France was in the midst of the "Huguenot Wars," marked by brutal conflicts between Catholics and Protestants. The court was also characterized by luxury, debauchery, and corruption. In an effort to quell the years of civil war, the Catholic French court decided to marry Princess Margot (Isabelle Adjani) to the leader of the Protestants, King Henry of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil). On August 24, 1572, the wedding was grandly held in Paris. Just as people were immersed in the joyous atmosphere, Queen Catherine (Virna Lisi) ordered a brutal massacre against the Protestants, famously known in Western history as the "St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre." The film is adapted from Alexandre Dumas' classic novel and won the Best Actress award (Virna Lisi) and the Jury Prize at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, as well as multiple awards at the 1995 César Awards, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Costume Design.
