The unsuccessful Japanese painter Shimamura (played by Ryo Ikebe) travels across the country and passes through a place called Snow Country. At a local hot spring inn, he encounters a 19-year-old shamisen performer named Komako (played by Keiko Kishi). Komako is beautiful, innocent, playful, and lovely. Shimamura is moved by the girl's purity; although he has feelings for her, he is reluctant to tarnish this precious gem. On the eve of leaving Snow Country to return to Tokyo, these two individuals, who admire each other yet are so different in status, finally break free from their shackles and come together. The following year, missing Komako, Shimamura returns to Snow Country, where Komako, in order to repay her shamisen master's nurturing, willingly becomes a geisha to earn money for the master's son, Yoshimura, who is ill. A girl named Yoko (played by Kaoru Yachigusa), who cares for Yoshimura, has feelings for him and is jealous of Komako's wavering between her fiancé Yoshimura and her patron Shimamura. This also stirs up turmoil in Shimamura's heart. Their second meeting ends in an awkward atmosphere, leaving the future of their love uncertain... This film is adapted from the novella of the same name by Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata.
