The story takes place in 1921, where Marguerite (played by Catherine Frot) is a woman who loves music but sings off-key. She owns a large castle near Paris and has a small audience who listens to her sing in the castle, but these hypocritical audience members secretly mock her behind her back. A young journalist writes an article about her performance, and Marguerite, believing in her musical talent, wants to do a public performance. The film is inspired by the story of American soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, who gained fame in the 1930s and 40s due to her terrible singing skills.
