Marta (played by Margit Carstensen) lives a dependent life with her cold and brutal father. When they travel to Rome for a holiday, her father suddenly dies of a heart attack. Marta does not feel particularly sad; on the contrary, she experiences freedom for the first time. Later, she meets an engineer named Helmut (played by Karlheinz Böhm), and they fall in love. However, Helmut's personality is just like Marta's father's, as he constantly insults and abuses her. Strangely, Marta seems to enjoy this abuse.
