Ten years ago, humanity paid a painful price for its foolishness as the dangerous and deadly simian flu virus spread globally, nearly destroying the world. In the primeval jungle adjacent to San Francisco, Caesar (Andy Serkis) leads his gorilla companions to establish a worry-free kingdom, until one day, the tranquility of the apes' home is once again disrupted by humans. The surviving humans in the old city face an energy crisis and attempt to utilize the hydroelectric power station in the heart of the forest for energy. Young scientist Malcolm (Jason Clarke) tries to convince the settlement leader Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) in hopes of gaining the trust and agreement of the ape tribe through peaceful means. However, Caesar's loyal ally Koba (Toby Kebbell) cannot shake his hatred for humans and attempts to challenge Caesar's authority.
