During the Vietnam War, three of the five close friends from Clayton, USA, who frequently hunted deer together—Nick (played by Christopher Walken), Stephen (played by John Savage), and Michael (played by Robert De Niro)—are about to head to the front lines. On the eve of their departure, Stephen marries his girlfriend Angela, and the wedding serves as their farewell party. The three young men are captured by the Vietnamese army on the battlefield, and the brutal captors force them to play a game of "Russian roulette." Michael seizes the opportunity to take a soldier's gun. Although the three friends manage to escape, they become separated during their flight. Michael and Stephen ultimately return to America, but Stephen is left permanently disabled and resides in a nursing home, unwilling to go home and burden his family. As the Vietnam War nears its end, Michael learns from Stephen that he frequently receives anonymous remittances from Saigon, and he deduces that it must be Nick. To reunite with his good friend, Michael decides to embark on another risky journey into Vietnam.
