Ruan Li (played by Chow Yun-fat) once participated in the Vietnam War. After the war ended, Ruan Li, with his martial arts skills but no goal, arrived in Hong Kong and became a hitman. Although he kills without hesitation, Ruan Li retains a kind heart. In Hong Kong, he encounters a girl named A-Lin (played by Kwan Priscilla), and they fall in love. However, during a mission, A-Lin's father becomes Ruan Li's target and is tragically killed. Gradually, A-Lin begins to suspect Ruan Li's true identity, and her suspicions make her the next target. Unable to harm A-Lin, Ruan Li takes her on a journey of escape.
