Anna, played by Isabelle Huppert, escapes with her family from the city to the countryside, only to find their village home occupied by others. During a dispute, her husband is killed, and Anna is left homeless with her children; along the way, her son is taken hostage by a homeless boy. They later reach a train station where many wait in agony, hoping the train will take them to a promised land. Anna hears about a group of religious warriors who dedicate themselves to saving humanity, with even her son willing to become a sacrifice. In extreme environments, humanity may not be reduced to mere wolf-like behavior. Haneke's style displays a stark beauty, aiming to eliminate sentimentality and find hope in human indifference.
