Jeff (played by Alain Delon) is a taciturn assassin who lives in a hotel, accompanied only by a bird. A loner, he is hired to assassinate the owner of a club; despite the flawless execution, he is apprehended by the police. The pianist, Marilyne (played by Cathy Rosier), recognizes Jeff as the suspicious man from that day, but she chooses to protect him, raising Jeff's suspicions. Jeff finds the intermediary to settle his payment, only to be shot and wounded by him. Having narrowly escaped, Jeff secretly uncovers the identity of his employer, tracks him down, and kills him, only to discover that Marilyne, who once sheltered him, is actually the employer's lover. With mixed emotions, Jeff confronts Marilyne at the club with a gun, but is shot dead by police who had been lying in wait. Later, it is revealed that Jeff's gun was not loaded, leaving the meaning of his actions a perpetual mystery.
