In the 1950s, a little boy named Ingmar (played by Anton Glanzelius) lives in a quiet town in Sweden with his sickly mother (Anki Lidén), his often-bullying older brother, and his beloved little dog. His father has left the family, and his mother is constantly troubled by illness. The two boys cannot get along at all and frequently fight at home. Distressed, their mother decides to send them to live with relatives separately. Like being expelled from home, Ingmar discovers a wider world… This film won the Best European Film Award at the 1987 Danish Film Critics Awards, the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the 1988 Boston Society of Film Critics Awards, the Best Foreign Language Film at the 1988 Golden Globe Awards, Best Film at the 1987 Seattle International Film Festival, and the Best Actor (Anton Glanzelius) and Best Film at the 1986 Swedish Film Awards.
