The story takes place in Sichuan at the end of the 19th century. Zheng Megu (played by Xu Qing), born in a rural area, marries a grocery store owner, Cai Xingshun, becoming the boss's wife. Cai Xingshun is honest and dull, lacking in romantic understanding, while Zheng Megu possesses stunning beauty, which immediately attracts gossip after her marriage. Fortunately, Cai Xingshun has a respected cousin, Luo Desheng (played by You Yong), who always defends Zheng Megu whenever someone tries to bully her. Over time, an inappropriate feeling develops between Zheng Megu and Luo Desheng. Luo Desheng returns home after several years and brings back Liu Sanjin (played by Cheng Xi), a prostitute who wants to reform. He exploits Liu Sanjin's beauty to drain the wealth of the grain merchant Gu Tiancheng (played by Zhao Jun).
