Critic Alexander (played by Erland Josephson) celebrates his fiftieth birthday at his home in Sweden, while his young son, who has just undergone throat surgery, cannot speak. The two plant a seedling in silence, hoping it will sprout green leaves. However, that very evening, the radio broadcasts a message about the launch of nuclear missiles, indicating that World War III is imminent. Desperate, Alexander prays to God for war not to happen, even willing to give up everything to prevent the apocalypse. In a state of exhaustion, Alexander burns down his house in hopes of rebirth for the world. Amidst the raging flames, he is taken to the hospital by ambulance. His young son goes to the shore to continue watering the seedling they planted together, and everything seems to return to calm. The last masterpiece directed by the renowned Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky during his lifetime, "Sacrifice" won four awards at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival, including the Catholic Humanitarian Spirit Award, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or for Best Film, winning the Best Foreign Language Film at the 41st British Academy Film Awards in 1988.
