The story takes place on May 6, 1938, a day that is extraordinary for both the people of Rome and the ordinary housewife, Antonietta (played by Sophia Loren). On this day, the dictators Hitler and Mussolini arrive in Rome for a summit, endlessly praising the fascism they uphold. Amidst the fervent and impassioned words of their speeches, the entire city is engulfed in a frenzy of excitement. However, all this fervor seems unrelated to Antonietta, who is at home cleaning and organizing. At this moment, she is trapped in deep melancholy, unable to free herself from a dreary marriage and a dull life. She then encounters her new neighbor, Gabriele (played by Marcello Mastroianni), and in a very short time, they fall in love with explosive passion. But after the night passes, everything returns to calm, as if nothing had ever happened.
