This film is a musical that embodies the essence of 1970s jazz. It won the Palme d'Or at the 33rd Cannes Film Festival in 1980 and received three Academy Awards at the 52nd Oscars (1979) for Best Costume Design, Best Editing, and Best Original Score. ◇Plot Introduction◇ As a musical theater fan, even if you are not very familiar with the name of Oscar-winning director Bob Fosse, I bet you have heard of the Tony and Oscar-winning "Chicago" and "Cabaret." Fosse was the writer and director of both of these musical film adaptations, and his other famous work is this film, "All That Jazz." (In fact, if you pay attention, you can spot many influences from "All That Jazz" in the choreography of "Chicago," and the very first number of "Chicago" is 'All That Jazz.') "All That Jazz" can be considered Bob Fosse's semi-autobiographical film, where the protagonist is a Broadway veteran director named Joe Gideon. He is imaginative, headstrong, and immensely talented, but due to a lack of lofty ideals and a correct worldview, the pressures of work and emotional indulgence lead him to despair and a declining health. Ultimately, amidst the songs and dances of his works, Gideon hums "Bye Bye Love" as he embarks on the path of no return on the operating table. Life is so unpredictable; Mr. Gideon can create box office miracles and attract various women, but like all of us, he often feels helpless against the void of the soul and the frailty of the body. Having friends who share his interests to chat with, reading and writing enjoyable articles, appreciating beautiful musicals, having a humorous spirit to smile often, and breathing in air free from SARS virus—who knows how long heaven can grant us such simple happiness? Song Highlights: "On Broadway," "After You've Gone," "Everything Old Is New Again," "Bye Bye Love."
