Russell Crowe will collaborate with "The Pursuit of Happyness" director Gabrielle Muccino to make a new film titled "Fathers and Daughters." The screenplay is sourced from the Hollywood blacklist, and the story tells of the familial bond between a father and his daughter living in New York. Crowe will play a renowned novelist who is also a widowed father, struggling with mental illness while raising his five-year-old daughter, Katie. The narrative will interweave between the 1980s and the modern Manhattan society where Katie lives, and the film will depict the childhood shadows that Katie tries to forget. Director Gabrielle Muccino describes this film as “an actor-driven film,” stating that he couldn’t find anyone better than Crowe to portray such a father-daughter relationship. Muccino is very confident in this film, saying “it’s heart-wrenching yet uplifting; for me, it feels like a classic American film reminiscent of the 1970s such as 'Kramer vs. Kramer' and 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'.” The story of Muccino's new film inevitably brings to mind his 2006 film "The Pursuit of Happyness," which depicts a poverty-stricken single father facing homelessness due to career failures while carrying the burden of raising his son. To ensure his son’s future, he rallies to overcome his struggles, ultimately finding success. This touching family story had previously propelled lead actor Will Smith to an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Muccino excels at portraying deep emotional connections and eliciting tears, and it’s anticipated whether the new film "Fathers and Daughters" can assist Russell Crowe in again contending for an Oscar acting award. After finishing the promotions for "Man of Steel" this year, Russell Crowe's upcoming films include Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" as well as Akiva Goldsman’s directorial debut "Winter’s Tale," along with his own directorial debut, the film "The Water Diviner."
