Joy (Jane Adams), Helen (Lara Flynn Boyle), and Tracy (Cynthia Stevenson) are three sisters who share a close bond, having grown up together and enjoyed a carefree childhood. As they grow older, the sisters enter a complex and chaotic society, facing emotional dilemmas that every woman must confront. Joy's relationship with her boyfriend has always been tumultuous. Tracy marries psychiatrist Bill (Dylan Baker), only to discover that the seemingly fine man harbors a dirty and ugly secret. Allen (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is one of Bill's patients, who unexpectedly meets the charming Helen and falls helplessly in love.
