Tom (played by Fredric March) is a playwright with grand ideals, while George (played by Gary Cooper) is an obscure painter. Both are part of the artistic community and share an apartment in Paris. By chance, Tom and George encounter a woman named Gilda (played by Miriam Hopkins), to whom they are both deeply attracted by her unique charm, falling into a love triangle. However, Gilda struggles to choose between the two men, coming up with the idea of moving in with Tom and George to encourage their creative work, thus forming a strange triangular relationship. To create a play, Tom needs to return to London for a while, and he worries that sparks might fly between George and Gilda during his absence.
