In the early 1990s, Poland is on the brink of welcoming a new future after the collapse of the communist regime. Four women, spanning decades in age, are about to face dramatic changes in their lives. A housewife trapped in a dull marriage unexpectedly falls in love with a priest; a meticulous and capable primary school principal suffers from a tumultuous affair; a young and beautiful dance instructor is unwilling to continue withering away in a long-distance relationship; and a literature teacher in her fifties, who dedicated her life to education, suddenly loses her job. Their dilemmas differ, yet their fates are tightly interconnected. This film inherits the legacy of Polish film masters like Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieślowski, boasting a refined yet intense visual style reminiscent of "Ida." Young director Tomasz Wasilewski skillfully combines restrained shots and cold tones to depict the tragic lives of the four women, continuing the excellent traits of Polish cinema that integrates historical legacy, social turmoil, and religious reflection, all reflected in dramatically rich personal stories. It won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival in 2016.
