The film is adapted from the play of the same name by the famous British playwright Christopher Marlowe. The 16th-century King of England neglects his queen and openly engages in shocking romantic behaviors with his same-sex lover, causing the entire kingdom's rule to collapse and face disintegration. The foresighted queen ultimately employs ruthless tactics to prevent this disaster from occurring. Describing this film as "highly conceptualized" still does not accurately express its complexity. Jarman reinterprets the 16th-century Christopher Marlowe's play through the lens of modern gender politics. The story revolves around King Edward's open homosexuality and does not take place within a lavish historical setting; the film features bare walls, dirty floors, and actors dressed in contemporary fashionable attire. Jarman fully explores all the subtext of homosexuality in Marlowe's original work and emphasizes it in his expression. He uses the original dialogue but mixes this dramatic story with contemporary oppression of gay people and the struggles of homosexuals. The film does not have a specific era; most of the time, various historical situations intertwine.
