Li Hong (played by Maggie Cheung) and her husband Nan Sheng (played by Tony Leung) are a couple living in Panyu, Guangdong. After Li Hong's efforts, they successfully apply for a visa to the United States, while Nan Sheng stays behind in China waiting for opportunities. After arriving in the U.S., Li Hong changes and writes a letter to her husband expressing her desire to return home. Nan Sheng continues to encourage her until he receives the letter applying for a divorce. He finds it hard to believe and worries about his wife, so he illegally travels to New York. Upon arriving in the U.S., Nan Sheng is unfamiliar with his surroundings and, due to his status as an illegal immigrant, even classmates refuse to shelter him. In a desperate situation, he meets a 15-year-old prostitute of Chinese descent named Jane, and after temporarily settling down, he continues searching for his wife. Nan Sheng gradually learns snippets about his wife's life in America, and his initial perceptions start to crumble. Originally wanting to help his wife, he soon becomes disheartened. One day, after many years apart, the two unexpectedly meet, but everything has changed...
