German photojournalist Philip lives a nomadic life and is once sent to the United States to complete an assignment, but he fails to accomplish it. Along the way, he encounters a mysterious American woman and inadvertently becomes the guardian of her nine-year-old daughter. Philip must journey through Germany with little Alice to help her find her grandmother, during which they unexpectedly come to understand each other. The story avoids being straightforward, develops with surprises, and presents its themes in an extremely elegant manner, allowing the audience to slowly appreciate the influence of American popular culture on post-war Europe.
