On a rainy night in 1946, novelist Maurice Bendrix (Ralph Fiennes) encounters his old friend, diplomat Henry Miles (Stephen Rea). From Henry, Maurice learns that Henry's wife, Sarah (Julianne Moore), seems to be having an affair, which makes him consume with jealousy. Two years earlier, Maurice had an affair with Sarah, and they often shared their passion behind Henry's back. However, after a major bombing, Sarah abruptly left. Unable to move on, Maurice accepts Henry's request to help investigate Sarah's whereabouts, but the outcome leaves him perplexed and contemplative... This film is adapted from Graham Greene's 1951 autobiographical novel of mysterious romanticism and won the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2000.
