This film is a biographical movie about the tumultuous life of former East German singer Gerhard Gundermann. By day, Gundermann drives an excavator at an open-pit coal mine, but at night he takes the stage as a singer, inspiring others with his self-composed music. His works focus on themes of life and death, while also addressing political and social critique. With a deeply personal and authentic style that is both melancholic and poetic, he became a popular icon in East Germany in the 1980s, yet frequently encountered conflicts with his superiors. Even after the reunification of Germany, Gundermann's popularity did not wane. However, in 1995, his past collaboration as a spy with the East German Stasi was made public; although this seemingly did not affect his music career, it led him into a long personal struggle. The film won six awards including Best Film, Director, and Actor at the 2019 German Film Awards, along with three nominations.
