The story takes place during World War II. To escape the war, the strong mother Cecila (played by Sophia Loren) takes her 13-year-old daughter Rosetta (played by Eleonora Brown) away from their hometown of Rome to temporarily settle in the remote town of Cicerone. Here, Cecila meets a young man named Michael (played by Jean Paul Belmondo), who is preparing to become a doctor. Michael is a romantic man who loves literature, and he teaches Rosetta to read and write poetry. Over time, Rosetta falls in love with him, but it is evident that Michael's attention is always focused on Cecila. To help Cecila obtain food, Michael goes to a friend's house of his father, only to encounter a German officer there. The officer strongly condemns Michael for not going to the battlefield and intends to forcibly take him away.
