In 1998 New York, documentary director Eric (played by Thure Lindhardt) has a one-night stand with closeted lawyer Paul (played by Zachary Booth), and the two develop mutual feelings that lead to a formal relationship, beginning a ten-year journey of love filled with ups and downs. Eric, while acknowledging Paul’s drug habit, doesn’t initially oppose it and occasionally partakes, but Paul’s addiction spirals out of control. As Eric's documentary wins international awards but he has no one to share it with, and when he finds his boyfriend submerged in drugs and male prostitutes in a hotel, he painfully realizes that his love for Paul is as destructive and helpless as addiction. Each argument, each compromise, and each struggle depletes and hurts both of them until forgiveness can no longer stop the tears... The film "Light Up The Lights" has been recognized as the saddest love movie of the year, was nominated for the main competition at Sundance, and won the Teddy Award at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival. The movie is like a poignant painting and a bittersweet love letter, delicately and authentically portraying the various joys and pains of the LGBTQ+ world. Director Ira Sachs, who previously won the Sundance Jury Grand Prize for "Forty Shades of Blue," brings his past romance to the screen in a semi-autobiographical manner, hoping to illuminate all the dark corners of the LGBTQ+ world—leaving no shadows.
