George (Richard Burton) is a history professor, and his wife Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) is the daughter of the president. The two have been married for many years, and their relationship has long since dulled. Moreover, the inequality in their status has planted significant hidden dangers in this marriage. One night, after returning home from a party, a weary George discovers that Elizabeth had invited a young couple, Nick (George Segal) and Honey (Sandy Dennis), over without informing him at all. Although he has many grievances, George habitually suppresses them deep inside. The young and handsome Nick catches Martha's attention, and watching his wife fawn over Nick makes George uneasy; a storm is brewing.
