Lena (Natalie Portman) is a biologist whose husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) mysteriously disappeared a year ago during a secret mission. For the past year, Lena has been living in sorrow. One day, a amnesiac Kane suddenly appears in front of Lena, then collapses and is taken to the hospital. There, Lena meets Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Dr. Ventress informs Lena that Kane was sent to an unknown area shrouded in a "shimmer." For three years, numerous teams have been sent to explore the area, but only Kane has returned alive. Moreover, the "shimmer" is continuously expanding. To uncover the truth, Lena volunteers to join the next team being dispatched, alongside Dr. Ventress, Anya (Gina Rodriguez), and Josie (Tessa Thompson).
