The story takes place in America in 1909, where Celie (played by Whoopi Goldberg) and Nettie (played by Akosua Busia) are sisters who share a deep bond. Although, as Black women, they must face harsh realities, they find solace in each other's company until Celie is forced to marry a man named Albert (played by Danny Glover). Albert is abusive, treating Celie little better than a maid, all while he is truly in love with a distant actress named Shug (played by Margaret Avery). Nettie comes to accompany Celie, but Albert drives her away after a failed attempt to assault her, leaving Celie completely cut off from any news of Nettie. In their oppressive lives, the women struggle and resist, but ultimately succumb to discrimination and power. Shug’s arrival changes everything; she is independent and strong, never fearing her identity as a woman. Her optimism inspires Celie to rebel, and finally, she leaves Albert, starting her own successful sewing business. Suddenly, one day, Nettie and her happy family appear before Celie once more, amidst a sea of purple flowers.
