The film tells the story of a rural Muslim elder in Ningxia's West Haigu, where there has been nine years of drought in ten years. After the elder's partner passes away, he and his son decide to slaughter their old cow, which has accompanied the elder for over ten years, on the day of the memorial service for his partner. In the days that follow, the elder and his son take great care of the cow and show their reluctance to part with it and their longing for the elder's partner.
