During the Guangxu period, the country was in turmoil, facing both internal and external threats, and China was on the brink of survival. Emperor Guangxu (played by Shu Shi) was in power but was controlled by Empress Dowager Cixi (played by Tang Ruoqing), living as if he were a puppet. The Minister of Revenue, Weng Tonghe, taught Guangxu the classics and instilled Enlightenment thoughts, sparking Guangxu's desire for reform; meanwhile, Guangxu's favorite concubine, Zhenfei (played by Zhou Xuan), saved silver daily for military funding. The catastrophic defeat in the Jiawu War led Weng Tonghe to return home, and before leaving, he recommended Kang Youwei to Guangxu. In the year of Wuxu (1898), Guangxu engaged with the reformists to implement changes, but faced resistance from the conservative faction led by Cixi, intensifying the conflict between both sides.
