1996 Venice Film Festival Luigi De Laurentiis Award 1997 Seattle International Film Festival New Director Award Introduction: This seemingly simple and documentary-style film depicts the personal search for roots by Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman. The film is divided into two parts. The first part captures the absurd and silent Arab areas of the ancient city of Nazareth. The second part observes the city from a relatively politicized perspective, with Elia Suleiman playing a more active role in this section. He returns to his birthplace in search of inspiration, but what he sees are harrowing images of the Arab people deeply entrenched in a cultural identity crisis. A striking example is a young Arab girl who desires a more independent status in her town than traditional women, but is thwarted by the prejudices of residents living in Jewish neighborhoods.
