In a small town in the Czech Republic, the annual firefighters' ball returns once again. This year's ball features something special: the elderly chief, suffering from cancer (played by Jan Vostrcil), is about to celebrate his 86th birthday. The older members of the fire brigade decide to throw a grand party for the chief and to present him with a golden axe in recognition of his lifetime contributions. The ball is indeed packed with activities: raffles, awards, a feast, dancing, and even an innovative beauty contest segment. However, things do not go as planned—gifts keep getting stolen, and the young ladies are reluctant to participate in the beauty contest. Amidst the chaos, a great fire also joins the fray… This film is the last work of director Miloš Forman before he left Czechoslovakia.
