On a winter evening, a headless female body is discovered at an ice skating rink. Upon investigation, the victim is identified as Liu Lizhu, a restaurant waitress. Detective Shan Liren (played by Ge You) starts to investigate the case. Liu's husband reacts coldly to his wife's murder, which seems illogical but ultimately rules him out as a suspect. A phone number found on the victim leads the police to a man named Li Jianping (played by You Yong). After questioning Li, they find out he has a history of deception and manipulating women emotionally. Blood-stained clothes of type B are found in his room, which matches the victim's blood type, but Li denies killing Liu Lizhu. The following spring, as the snow melts, a fisherman recovers Liu Lizhu's head from the river.
