The daughter of Emperor Daizong of Tang, Princess Shengping (played by Ji Ping), marries Guo Ai (played by Guo Fengying), the sixth son of General Guo Ziyi. According to palace rules, the son-in-law can only enter the palace after the red lanterns are hung high. Guo Ai is dissatisfied with this regulation but cannot change it. On Guo Ziyi's birthday, Princess Shengping does not attend the celebration, which leads to ridicule and mockery from Guo Ai's brothers and sisters-in-law, calling him henpecked. Guo Ai feels both guilty and angry and strikes the princess upon returning to the palace. The princess runs to the imperial palace to cry out her grievances, hoping that Emperor Daizong and the Empress Dowager will seek justice for her. After an investigation, Emperor Daizong and the Empress Dowager learn the truth of the matter and discover that the princess is indeed at fault for her absence at her father's birthday celebration. Emperor Daizong reprimands the princess and intends to execute the son-in-law to vent her frustration. When the princess hears this shocking decision, she becomes frightened and flustered. However, Emperor Daizong reassures her that it is only a hypothetical scenario. Having learned that Guo Ai hit the princess, Guo Ziyi immediately brings Guo Ai to the court to apologize. Considering Guo Ziyi's old age and considerable contributions, he should not be harmed due to a quarrel between children, so Emperor Daizong forgives Guo Ai's mistake and promotes his official position to show importance. Afterwards, Emperor Daizong takes Guo Ai back to the harem, ordering the princess not to bully him with her influence and requiring her to immediately apologize to her father. He also orders the cancellation of the red lanterns at the palace gates and the regulations of grand court ceremonies, and together with Empress Shen, encourages the young couple to reconcile. Eventually, the misunderstanding between Guo Ai and the princess is resolved.
