Based on the novel of the same name by Yu Hua. Rich heir Fugui (Ge You) has a gambling addiction. After repeated unsuccessful attempts to persuade him by his wife Jiazhen (Gong Li), she leaves him with their daughter Fengxia. That night, Fugui loses all their family fortune and causes his father's death from anger. Forced to sell his mother's jewelry, he rents a dilapidated house to survive. A year later, Jiazhen returns home with Fengxia and their newborn son Youqing. Fugui turns over a new leaf and starts living a modest life by performing shadow puppetry. However, good times are short-lived. During the civil war, Fugui is captured by the Kuomintang and used as a laborer. After many twists and turns, he finally returns to his hometown and reunites with his family, but Fengxia becomes mute due to illness. Throughout the later Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, although he experiences some small blessings, adversity continues to shadow him.
