Eugene (David Duchovny) is a highly experienced surgeon, but in his spare time, he is also a drug addict struggling with substance abuse. During one surgery, Eugene, having taken drugs, experiences hallucinations that lead to a failed operation, resulting in the death of an innocent girl. Overwhelmed by guilt, Eugene begins to spiral into despair. One day, Eugene goes to a bar as usual to drink his troubles away and unexpectedly witnesses a shooting incident where a man is critically injured from a gunshot wound to the chest. Acting on his instinct as a doctor, Eugene rushes to save the man’s life, successfully stabilizing him. A man named Raymond (Timothy Hutton) witnesses this act and approaches Eugene, hoping to hire him for a job where Eugene treats those criminals who cannot seek help at hospitals.
