Chang Jiabi is a folk artist in clay sculpture. His ancestor, Chang Qingshan, was appreciated by Emperor Qianlong during the prosperous era of Qianlong and was granted the title "Clay Figurine Chang." He was summoned to the palace to create clay figurines specifically for the emperor and the empress to enjoy. However, Chang Qingshan was unwilling to be a caged bird and yearned to return to the common folk. Finally, he escaped from the palace. From then on, the Chang family drifted in foreign lands for generations, enduring much hardship. By the time of Chang Jiabi, it was the second year of the Republic of China. Chang Jiabi returned to Beijing from another province and set up a clay figurine stall with his sister, Chang Jiayu. They created their own figurines as well as made figures for others, making a living this way. A local bully named San Heng Wang demanded that Chang Jiabi make a figure for him. After it was completed, he complained that the likeness was too ugly, insisted it didn’t resemble him, and attacked, smashing the clay figurine stall. He even had Chang Jiabi thrown into prison. Zhao Canghai, a wealthy landlord on the street, inherited his ancestor Zhao Er’s business and opened a store called "Cangzhenzhai" that dealt in antique collectibles and paintings. His assistant, Yang Jinbao, was skilled in martial arts and loved to help the oppressed. He asked Zhao Canghai to step in and save Chang Jiabi. To redeem the figurines made by Jiabi, Zhao Canghai bribed the police chief with money, rescued Chang Jiabi, and had San Heng Wang imprisoned. After his release, Jiabi was extremely grateful to his benefactor, and Zhao Canghai invited him to stay in one of his spare rooms, allowing Jiabi to create clay figurines for "Cangzhenzhai," which thrived, making Zhao Canghai wealthy. Chang Jiayu and Yang Jinbao developed feelings for each other, loving each other quietly. Mr. Liu, a descendant of Liu Zhenren, who had ties with the Chang family, made a living by face-reading and fortune-telling. One day, he told Jiabi that the overseas Chinese in America wanted to invite him to participate in the Panama Fair. However, Zhao Canghai did not allow this. He often stamped the clay figurines made by Jiabi with a forged seal of Chang Qingshan to create fake antiques for enormous profits. After seeing Zhao Canghai's true colors, Jiabi decided to break free and planned to start his own business, creating and selling his own figurines. To control Chang Jiabi, Zhao Canghai contacted San Heng Wang, who had already turned into a bandit, and had Chang's wife, Cuihua, kidnapped for ransom. Jiabi managed to gather a thousand yuan and asked Mr. Liu to rescue her, but he could only redeem the boy that Cuihua gave birth to in the mountains; Cuihua jumped off a cliff to die for her chastity. The Chang siblings were devastated. To avoid Zhao Canghai's persecution, the entire Chang family had to leave their home and flee to another place. Yang Jinbao killed Zhao Canghai, who had come to chase the Chang family, and also left his hometown in pursuit of the siblings. Five years later, he finally reunited with the Chang siblings. By this time, Chang Jiabi was old and sick. He encouraged his sister to continue making clay figurines and pass down the Chang family’s sculpting skills.
