Franky (played by Jack McMurray) moves to Scotland with his mother Liz (played by Emily Mortimer) and grandmother. At nine years old, he is a hearing-impaired child, smart, and sensible, filled with anticipation for his father. He often writes letters to his seafaring father and hangs a nautical chart of the ship his father is on. However, he doesn’t know that it’s all a kind-hearted lie from his mother, who has fabricated everything about his father; in reality, they move around to escape his father’s brutal domestic violence. Each “letter from Dad” is written by Liz, meant to spare her son’s feelings. When Franky learns that his father's ship is about to dock, he wants to meet him. Liz did not expect such a ship to exist and, reluctant to tell her son the entire truth, seeks the help of a friend to find a stranger (played by Gerard Butler) to impersonate his father, and the delightful Franky quickly wins his affection. The three of them enjoy their time together, but just as the “husband” is about to leave, Liz reveals that Franky's deafness is due to her real husband's abuse. It seems that a subtle bond develops between them. Liz refuses the dying request of her husband David to see their son, and soon afterward, she tells Franky that his father has passed away. Liz then receives a letter from her son, revealing that the clever Franky has already figured everything out…
