The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Russian-French Jewish writer Irène Némirovsky, telling a love story set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Matthias Schoenaerts plays a German officer who moves into a French countryside home and develops a relationship with the female host played by Michelle Williams; however, their love faces obstacles from the war and opposition from their families.
