Pan Laowu, Shi Gu, and Zhao Liang are three ordinary loggers. During the decade of turmoil, they drift along the Xiao River, carrying the trauma of catastrophe. Worries, frustrations, and injustices entangle them, and they cannot break free, resulting in boring arguments, venting through fights, and drinking away their sorrows. At night, the log raft docks in the wilderness. Shi Gu goes ashore to find his fiancée, Gai Xiu, who has been forced to marry by the district committee director, Li Jiadong. He encounters the old district chief, Chen Minghe, who is under supervision and barely alive. Pan Laowu, who comes to look for Shi Gu, resolutely decides to move the old district chief to a safe place. Although Gai Xiu is forced into marriage, she has always resisted. Upon hearing the news, she escapes and waits by the river for the log raft, reuniting with Shi Gu. After Gai Xiu boards the raft, the timid Zhao Liang worries that Li Jiadong will pursue them. Pan Laowu, acting heroically, agrees to bear all consequences, allowing Gai Xiu to stay on the raft and drift with them. The young couple's plight evokes memories for Pan Laowu of his own tragic love story from over thirty years ago, when he had a sweet romance with the innocent girl, Wu Aihua. However, because he was in debt from losing the log raft, he could not bear to let Wu Aihua suffer alongside him and chose to separate. His love for Wu Aihua became a bittersweet memory, forever etched in Pan Laowu's heart. When the raft drifts to Shuanghe Street, Pan Laowu seeks ginseng to save the dying District Chief Xu but finds he lacks enough money. Zhao Liang, typically stingy, unexpectedly generously opens his wallet, taking out money meant for his daughter's dowry. At a noodle shop, Pan Laowu suddenly runs into Wu Aihua, only to find that she has become a beggar after 30 years of hardships. The passage of time has created an invisible barrier between them, making them feel estranged and indifferent. Yet, their former love, combined with today's suffering, forms an invisible chain binding their hearts together. Wu Aihua shares her unfortunate circumstances, and Pan Laowu explains the reasons for his departure back then, using sincere passion and strength to rekindle Aihua's faith in life. Wu Aihua accepts Pan Laowu's commission to deliver ginseng to District Chief Xu, but the ginseng is snatched away by Li Jiadong's gang. Pan Laowu risks his life to reclaim the ginseng. As heavy rain pours down and a mountain flood erupts, the raft rushes through the torrent. Pan Laowu spots a floating log in the flood; he pushes his companions off the raft to escape and navigates the raft forward. In the morning, Shi Gu, Gai Xiu, and Zhao Liang search along the riverbank, calling out for Pan Laowu.
