Waris (played by Liya Kebede) was born in the deserts of Somalia and lived a nomadic life with her mother. At the age of three, Waris underwent female genital mutilation as per Somali customs. When she turned twelve, her father intended to marry her off to a sixty-year-old man in exchange for five camels. On the eve of her wedding, with her mother's tacit approval, Waris walked long distances in the desert to seek refuge with her grandmother in Mogadishu, where she also obtained a chance to work as a maid for the aunt of the then Somali ambassador to the UK. Shortly after arriving in Britain, a war broke out in Somalia, the old government was overthrown, and Waris seized the chaos to escape the embassy and became homeless on the streets of Britain. Waris encountered Marilyn (played by Sally Hawkins), who took her in, and later met a talent scout while working in a restaurant. Ultimately, she was discovered and became a world-famous model, dedicating herself to the women's liberation movement. The film "Desert Flower" is adapted from the bestselling autobiography of Waris Dirie, a Black model born in Somalia.
