The peaceful life of the Frenchman André (played by Michel Galabru) and his granddaughter Jeanne (played by Julie Delarme) is shattered by the arrival of World War II and the German occupation of France. Even more unacceptable to them is that one of the rooms in their home has been requisitioned as a living space for a German officer, Werner (played by Thomas Jouannet). They maintain a cold demeanor towards this enemy officer, especially Jeanne, who never speaks to him, even when he greets them. Unexpectedly, after spending several days together, this young officer begins to discuss his life, music, and French culture with them, revealing the hidden inner world beneath his Nazi uniform. At the same time, Jeanne is actively participating in the activities of the French underground resistance against the German army. Gradually, a strange bond forms between the two young people from opposing sides. This feeling crystallizes into a single sentence spoken by Jeanne when they part; it is the first thing she says to him and the only thing she says... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name written by French author Vercors in 1941.
