Poet Alexander (Bruno Ganz), suffering from terminal cancer, attempts to entrust his dog, who has been by his side, to his biological daughter the day before entering the hospital to await death, but is met with rejection. His daughter's lack of understanding regarding his situation, along with his son-in-law's intention to sell their ancestral home, deeply saddens Alexander, leading him to leave in despair. As Alexander faces the last day of his life in solitude, various fragments of life during his late wife Anna’s existence, moments visiting his elderly, frail mother living alone in a nursing home, and the 19th-century poet Romios, whom he has spent most of his life studying, all come to him in either real or dreamlike form to help alleviate his confusion about "how long tomorrow will last."
