Steve (played by Bill Murray) is a marine documentary director whose works have once painted the childhoods of many children with dreamy colors. During a shoot, Steve's old friend is killed by a tiger shark, which deeply impacts him. He vows to find the tiger shark for revenge and make it the subject of his new film. At a press conference, Steve meets a young man named Ned (played by Owen Wilson), who claims to be his son, and invites him to join his creative team. Steve faces numerous challenges, including a lack of funding, issues in his marriage, and the declining appeal of the documentaries he makes. A journalist named Jane (played by Cate Blanchett) joins Steve's team to write a personal biography about him; however, her relationship with Steve is not harmonious, and she grows closer to Ned, which makes Steve extremely jealous.
