In 1929 Britain, Mrs. Whittaker (Kristin Scott Thomas) is the head of an aristocratic family, meticulously managing the household and balancing the relationships with her husband (Colin Firth) and two daughters. However, everything is disrupted by the return of her eldest son, John Whittaker (Ben Barnes). John's wife is the glamorous American racing driver, Lalida (Jessica Biel), whose many actions are deemed reckless by her traditional mother-in-law. Additionally, the two daughters disapprove of her and feel sorry for their brother. While Lalida goes out for joyrides with her husband’s friends, others ride gracefully on horseback, but she speeds by on a motorcycle. In isolation, she confides in her father-in-law, and they even dance together at a ball, which transforms the situation into a fierce battle between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law... This film is adapted from Noël Coward's play, and Kristin Scott Thomas received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the British Independent Film Awards for this role. The film was also selected for screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, marking Jessica Biel's first voice performance.
